ROUND LEICESTERSHIRE RELAY, SUNDAY 7th AUGUST 2005

William Clapp 2nd fastest on leg

Despite racing 1500m and 3000m the previous day, second claim Ely Runner William Clapp was 2nd fastest of 31 runners on leg 6 in 50:52, five seconds behind the fastest runner.  After a short steep downhill start, his leg was on mainly flat roads and the canal towpath from Slawston to Foxton via Great Bowden. Not all the 13 legs on this 90+ mile road and trail relay were accurately measured, but judging by the times William's leg (billed at 7 miles but actually over 8 miles) was probably the longest.  He halved the lead to 1:14 at the end of his leg, keeping his 1st claim club Harborough AC in 2nd position and enabling the following stage runner to put Harborough into the lead. His team eventually finished 2nd in 9:18:53 which was 9.5 minutes behind winners Huncote. Conditions were hot and sunny.

Overall                2:42:28                         2:50:49

The swim in Victoria Docks was crowded in the early stages and David lost time behind a slow bunch. Fortunately conditions were dry for the flat but very twisting bike course. In the two lap run, David found his second 5k was 2 minutes faster than his first 5k.

Conditions were mild and dry.
