Ely Runners National Association of Running Clubs Long Distance Relay Champions, Best Small Club, 3rd overall of 50 teams, and 3rd in Open Class.
Ian Day fastest on stage 2 in record time

A team of 17 Ely Runners completed this spectacular and continuous two day mixed terrain relay race, around the periphery of Norfolk, heaped in glory with trophies and medals for being 3rd of 50 teams, 3rd in their tough Open Class, ARC National Champions, and Best Small Club. Ian Day was awarded for running the tough off-road 2nd stage of 14.06 miles in the fastest time of 1:26:12 which was also an event record.

Ely Runners' team ran the 193.06 miles in 21 hours 34 minutes 13 seconds, an amazing 6:42 per mile pace, and nearly 29 minutes ahead of their predicted schedule! The race started and finished in King's Lynn.

The club congratulates and thanks all the Ely Runners and their helpers involved in their team and the race organisation, especially: Team Manager Alan Rutterford and his assistants Rachel Roberts, Julie Foreman and Karen Rowe;  RNR Chairman and Race Director Ian Vaughan-Arbuckle for (again) organising the event; Rod Baron (Web Master) for managing the entries and results; and Richard Handoll (Course Director), for his work on the course.

Official Ely Runners results:

This result is commendable because Emma was up against some of the best runners in the other teams. The stage is run in the middle of the night.

ROBIN HOOD FESTIVAL MARATHON & HALF MARATHON, NOTTINGHAM, SUNDAY 16th SEPTEMBER 2007
Marathon personal bests for Simon Bottomley and Fraser Badcock

Ely Runners were among the finishers in both events with positions and chip times as follows:

Half Marathon (6,507 finishers)
1,085th      Ian Green                1:44:31
2,512th      Michael Butler         1:56:36

Marathon (1,059 finishers)
724th        Simon Bottomley     4:27:00      PB by 41:46
753rd        Fraser Badcock       4:30:04      PB by 21:00

The first half of the course was hillier and tougher than expected, particularly as the weather was very warm. Due to the large field, the route was a bit congested during the early stages but thinned out in the second half. It also became mainly flat and easier to obtain a steady pace. During the last third of the full marathon, the wind increased to make running more difficult, especially around the exposed rowing lake. Overall they enjoyed this well organised race and recommend it to other club members.

Ely Runner Ian Day was 10th of 615 finishers in 38:30. The hilly multi-terrain course was only 5% on paths, the rest being on trail, rough meadow, parkland and fields. Ian Day & John Crisp beat the Train

Two Ely Runners were amongst the 689 finishers in this popular race to beat a train on the historic Talyllyn narrow-gauge steam railway which runs from the mid Wales coast at Tywyn up into the hills to Abergynolwyn and Nant Gwernol via Dolgoch Falls. The 14.75 miles course was out and back over multiple terrain which involved negotiating steep ascents and descents, severe cambers, narrow sheep tracks, wooded tracks and rough meadows. The return route, which crosses the face of the hillside, was particularly difficult with steep ascents and descents on narrow and very muddy footpaths. Due to frequent rainfall, the route was slippery and in places unstable. Ian Day finished in an exceptional 11th place in 1:35:37 and John Crisp was 34th in 1:41:39. Both runners comfortably beat the train which (with stops) took 1:48 between its departure and arrival whistles. The only Ely Runner to have previously beaten the train was Kevin Ross in 2000 when he finished 115th in 1:44:45, a mere 26 seconds ahead of the train.
