Ely Runners Richard and Gina Handoll were amongst the 1,250 entrants, 915 starters, and 856 finishers in this tough preparation for a full 'Ironman' triathlon. The 70.3 mile event comprised a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride, and 13.1 mile run. They both had good swims and bike rides but their runs were much slower than they had hoped due to tiredness from the previous two disciplines. The scenic hills of Exmoor were challenging for the bike and run. However, conditions were very good, being fairly warm with little wind and no rain. Richard finished 628th and Gina 786th overall. UNIVERSITY OF DURHAM ORIENTEERING SPRINT RACE, WEDNESDAY 13th JUNE 2007
Robert Campbell 2nd
Ely Runner Robert Campbell finished 2nd of 26 in 15:08 for the 2.4k course in the inaugural 'sprint' race held around the University Colleges a hill to the south of the city. The race was won in 13:45 by fellow Cleveland Orienteer Klub Duncan Archer, who is currently ranked 6th in GB and next week represents GB in the Orienteering World Cup in Norway.
The Durham race was only 2.4k but had 22 controls (1 nearly every 100 metres) and went around university colleges, between halls of residences and through a marquee erected for a summer ball! After the heatwave of the weekend, the rain and low temperature (13C) caused the concrete running surface to be slippery.
Orienteering sprint races are a relatively new discipline in orienteering and were initially sneered upon by traditionalists because they use a greater variety of terrain including urban settings and appear easier. However, since their inclusion in the World Championships a few years ago, they have become increasingly popular. They can be demanding and require split-second decisions on routes - the fast running speeds tempt athletes to go too fast and make mistakes which, in a short race, can be costly. Races are literally won by a few seconds. For example, Robert missed the fastest route to the first control because he didn't spot a tunnel on the map and ended going up and over and back on himself to loose 20 valuable seconds, which could have been many places in a large championship. When he returns to live in Ely later this summer, Robert hopes to organise a sprint orienteering race in Ely, perhaps around the King's School.

INTERNATIONAL 31 KM SKY RACE, ITALY TO SWITZERLAND, SUNDAY 10th JUNE 2007
Two Ely Runners were amongst the 488 finishers in a spectacular but very tough mountain race. The first 2 miles included 2,200 ft of climb in an overall ascent of 6,000 ft from the start to 13 miles prior to a steep descent of 6,000 ft in 6 miles to the finish at 19 miles. Official results:
435th Natalle Coles 5:05:51
439th Adam Etches 5:07:12
The course was mainly off-road on rocky alpine paths with small sections of road at the start and finish. Clear blue skies on the day gave spectacular view across some of the most beautiful scenery in the Alps. The race was very well organized with plenty of aid stations, even in the most inaccessible parts of the route. Two helicopters followed the runners and mountain rescue teams were in position along the more dangerous parts of the course. Some of the course was over very steep gradients and at two places there were ropes to help the runners rappel down the slopes. This was quite dangerous, as Adam found out at 15 miles, when he fell from a roped descent and ended up bruised with rope burns on his hands. Despite a resulting loss of confidence, he struggled on, determined to finish.
The runners had plenty of support and encouragement from the spectators who lined most of the course including the high pass at 8,500 ft. At the spectacular finish in the main square at Poschiavo (Switzerland), the large crowd gave a massive cheer to all the finishers who then enjoyed a fine pasta meal with red wine and strong coffee.
Although it was a hard event, they both had a fantastic time and consider they have found a sport that makes a category ‘A’ fell race look like a stroll in the hills! 'Skyrunning' is governed by its own federation http://www.fsa-sky.org/new/index.php and is an extreme sport with elite and dedicated competitors.
TWIN PEAK ORIENTEERING EVENT, LAKE DISTRICT, SATURDAY/SUNDAY 9th/10th JUNE 2007
Following a month of illness in the spring and lack of endurance training, Ely Runner Robert Campbell still opted to run in the two-day event in the M21 Long (Open) category. He finished 10th overall with 16 runners completing both days but more on one day. On Saturday he was 12th of 19 in 98:02 for the 9.0k course through the southern part of the High Dam area west of Lake Windermere and on Sunday fared better by finishing 8th of 18 in 89.52 for the 9.4k course in the northern part of the area. It is one of the most technically challenging, physically tough and diverse areas in England, comprising rocky deciduous woodland, open bilberry & heather moorland, undulating birch and bracken, marsh, thick pine plantations and a rocky outcrop with a myriad of small hills and re-entrants. Conditions were difficult, being warm (about 25C) and quite humid with little breeze and no water stations due to the inaccessibility of the course.
