View 2012-01-22 Folksworth 15 - Folksworth, Cambs 15m The Folksworth 15 is well known locally for providing an early form ‘barometer’ for those in training for a spring marathon – and the 2012 edition proved to be no exception. The course is a two lap affair with each lap taking in three significant hills and consisting of a total climb of ~530 ft. As a bonus this year’s race was accompanied by a strong westerly wind that peaked at over 30mph at noon – midway through the race!! The wind made it particularly tough going for the first few miles, but then runners were assisted with a strong cross/tail wind for most of the remainder of lap one. By the start of the second lap the wind had picked up significantly – making miles 8-10 particularly tough going on tiring legs. Mile 10 was particularly brutal as it also included the second climb of Morborne hill – as Mel fisher said afterwards “on the way up it felt as though the wind was trying to blow you back down....and on the way down the other side it felt as though the wind was trying to blow you back up again!!” The final mile also proved tough going, with one last hill followed by a final 0.5mile stretch into the wind.....not a race for a sprint finish. Despite the wind there were some fine performances with two club records, four personal bests and two ER completing their first measured 15m races. After a conservative start Steve Tovey and Graham Chapman gradually made their way through the field aiming for something just under their intended marathon race pace – both came home in new PB times and Graham also registered a new MV55 Club Record (by 6:56 – sorry Charlie). John Crisp would’ve lead the Ely contingent home in a sub 1:40 time – but stomach problems in the last 5m cost John several minutes. Daniel Waite, in his first race in Ely colours, put in a solid performance finishing close behind the rapidly improving David Mould. David recorded yet another PB – as did Mel Fisher. Slightly further back there were also strong performances from John Crawford and Nicola Bramley – with Nicola establishing a new club record in the FV50 category. Colin Doak also had a solid run, but was unavailable for comment. Apart from the wind the weather was unseasonably mild and fine for running. The race was won by Aaron Scott of NVH in a new course record of 1:19:07, with the 1st lady (20th overall) being Philipa Taylor of NVH in 1:35:24. View 2012-01-15 Frostbite Friendly League Junior Race 4 – Whitemoor Prison, March 1.4m XC Some of our top junior runners were absent for the latest Frostbite race due to illness and other race commitments meaning there was a bit more pressure on the juniors present, however they didn't let us down. The race was very fast, with a very hard surface due to the hard overnight frost. The juniors found the course interesting with the Prison looming to the side of them, but found the exit from the Country Park a bit confusing and slightly hazardous as they didn’t know whether to run on the pavement or on the road and there were no marshals to let them know where to go. Anyway, they all got back without any injuries and everyone managed a sprint finish. All in all another good result for the Juniors. Official Results: 21st Alexander Ellwood 9:10 32nd Michael Ford 9:21 37th Fraser Crossman 9:30 68th Molly Butler 10:18 70th Luke Sturman 10:22 78th Esme Wright 10:33 95th Nathan Pennington 11:14 113th Jamie Rendell-Read 11:58 There were 147 finishers, with the winner being Tim Cobden of C&C in 7:37. Ely Runners were 7th on the day with 228 running points and remain 4th overall in the league (39 points) with two races remaining. 2012-01-19 12:09:37
View 2012-01-15 Frostbite Friendly League Senior Race 4 – Whitemoor Prison, March 5m XC The latest in the Frostbite series of races was hosted at a new venue by March AC. The race took place in the shadow of Whitemoor Prison, with race HQ and refreshments provided at the Prison’s social club. The race started on the access road to the prison, but after a short stretch on tarmac the race turned into the nearby country park and the next 2 miles were run on a ‘there and back’ route over gravel/grass paths made slippery by the thawing overnight frost. The race then returned to the road for a mile before heading out over farm tracks, grassy river bank and finally one last spin back through the country park. On arrival runners were greeted by a still and frosty morning leading to concerns for fingers and toes. Although it was still cold by the time the race started the frost had begun to thaw leaving muddy/slippery conditions on the off-road sections. First home for Ely was the rapidly improving Robin Webb finishing in 35th place in a PB time of 30:20. Next home for Ely was Steve Tovey (31:10), closely followed by Graham Chapman in a new MV55 club record (31:45). The scoring men’s team was completed by Conan Fryer (31:56), Ciaran Murray (33:49), Nick Dowdy (37:41) and Adrian Scaites-Stokes (38:47) with Steve Starr (38:50, PB), Brent Crossman (39:42, 1st 5m) and John Turner (40:49) not far behind. Lesley Wright continued her fine form into the New Year with yet another PB (37:24) and Sarah Edwards made a welcome return to ER colours (38:39). Sadly the lack of a third scoring lady on the day meant the club collected a rather large number of extra running points due to the 421 finishers. Official Results: 30th Robin Webb 30:20 (PB)(Scoring Team-M) 45th Steve Tovey 31:11 (Scoring Team-M) 57th Graham Chapman 31:45 (MV55 Club Record) (Scoring Team-M) 61st Conan Fryer 31:56 (Scoring Team-M) 96th Ciaran Murray 33:49 (Scoring Team-M) 187th Lesley Wright 37:24 (PB) (Scoring Team-F) 194th Nick Dowdy 37:41 (Scoring Team-M) 221st Sarah Edwards 38:39 (Scoring Team-F) 224th Adrian Scaites-Stokes 38:47 (Scoring Team-M) 227th Steve Starr 38:50 (PB) 243rd Brent Crossman 39:42 260th John Turner 40:49 There were 421 finishers on the day, with the winner being Aaron Scott of NVH in 26:08. View 2012-01-14 Country to Capital 45 - Wendover To Little Venice, London 45m Emma Greaves took part in this popular point to point race at the weekend. For the first 20 miles Emma found things slow going due to having to navigate through towns and countryside, repeatedly getting lost and then unlost! Emma was grateful to meet some lovely people early in the race and they all struck together throughout so being lost wasn’t as daunting as it could have been. Once they reached the Union Canal the running was smoother as navigating wasn’t an issue. The race organization was exceptional and very friendly; Emma would recommend any ‘Gobeyond’ event. The weather was perfect, cool, calm and sunny. The scenery and route were inspiring, starting from Wendover with trails and hills, through Bucks and then following Union Canal to the finish in Little Venice near Paddington. Emma finished with reserve in the tank, no blisters, no aches or pains and she still has all of her toenails, sign of a good race! Emma finished in a highly commendable time of 9:00:51: Official Results: 148th Emma Greaves 09:00:51 2012-01-17 08:53:02

View 2012-01-08 Cambs AA XC Championships - Priory Park, St Neots, Cambs Various A healthy contingent of Ely Runners made the journey to St Neots for the 2012 Cambs AA XC championships. Each of the courses was made up of various length loops of Priory Park and so consisted of plenty of grass, mud and hills. Weather conditions were cool and breezy. ER juniors were in particularly fine form - with impressive 3rd and 5th place finishes for Luke Crisp and Lewis Leonard in the U13 and U11 boy’s races respectively. Linden Smith, our sole female representative on the day, put in a fine performance in the ladies senior race finishing the 5.8k course in 30th place in a time of 26:42. The men's race consisted of four unequal laps of the Park. Laps 1 and 3 headed straight up to the top of the park on open grassland, whereas laps 2 and 4 took runners into a very muddy and slippery section in a wooded area of the park. The ground was heavy and everyone felt weary at the finish - although the fact that the GPS measured course was more like 6.6m (i.e. more than 10.5k) rather than the advertised 10k might have had something to do with it! The field in the men's race seemed particularly strong this year - and the ER contingent could only watch in awe as most of the field disappeared off into the distance. U11 Boys (1.7k) 44 finishers 5th Lewis Leonard 7:01 26th Luke Sturman 8:12 There were 44 finishers, with the winner being Owen Barker of Peterborough AC in 6:46. View 2011-12-11 Bedford Harriers Half Marathon - Wootton, Bedford, Beds H.Mar Several runners took the short journey to Bedford to take part in the Bedford Half. The course consists of 2 miles flat - hill - 1 mile flat - then 5 miles uphill and four back down to the finish. This year it was windy for the first time in a few years and it was runners’ faces for the uphill elements. Tom Bracegirdle and Alex Tate (both running for 1st claim Muddy Mucky Munkeys) put in impressive times finishing close together in 6th and 8th respectively. In John Manlow’s view it was one race too far particularly after his exertions at the Nene Valley 10 the previous week. The Bedford Half is a great race - good organisation, a challenging course, a good memento (water resistant jacket this year), flawless bus transfer, excellent marshals. John started off ok sharing the workload with another runner. However at 9 miles they got to the downhill section and John felt his calf start to tighten , he decided to ignore it for a mile or 2 but at 12 miles he started to slow and at 13 was forced to hobble to the line. Stephen Howard ran well with Jason Mann not far behind him, unfortunately neither of them or Colin Doak, who also ran, were available for comment. Official Results: 6th Tom Bracegirdle 01:13:07 (PB) (2nd claim) 8th Alex Tate 01:13:30 (2nd MV35) (2nd Claim) 36th John Manlow 01:19:02 123rd Stephen Howard 01:27:26 137th Jason Mann 01:28:19 (PB) 1293rd Colin Doak 02:06:43 There were 1523 finishers and Paul Martelleti won for the second time in 1:08:48. 2011-12-14 14:32:31

View 2011-12-11 Frostbite Friendly League Senior Race 3 - Hinchingbrook Park, Huntingdon 5m XC Twelve members made the short journey to Huntingdon to represent ER in the third Frostbite race of the series held at Hinchingbrooke Country Park. The 5m Cross-Country course is made up of a mixture of muddy trails and gravel paths with only a short half-mile section on tarmac. Conditions on the day were cool with a slight breeze, with a brief shower during the race adding to the wintry feel. The course was wet and muddy in places but not too demanding considering the time of year. Continuing his fine recent form Gary Wilberforce was first home for Ely in 10th place recording a time of 29:13. Further down the field there were fine PB performances from Linden Smith, Steve Starr, Emma Greaves, Sharon Leonard and Anita Lewis on a day when the ladies very much outshone the men. Many thanks to Heidi Uff and Andy Nixon for being stand-in team managers on the day. View 2011-12-04 Ulverston Xmas Pudding 10K - Ulverston, Cumbria 10k While visiting family up in Cumbria Craig Holgate ran the Ulverston 10k. He ran it as a hard training / speed session as a break from the long miles he has been putting in (see Hereward Ultra!), so he was happy with his 3rd place in 33.29 and a new MV35 club record! Craig ran in a group of four just over a minute behind the two leaders until the 6 mile mark and then sprinted. The weather was very windy and cold. All finishers received a Christmas pudding. Craig's 5 year old daughter Eloise ran 10.23 in the 1 mile fun run. Results: 3rd Craig Holgate 00:33:29 (MV35 Club Record) 2011-12-06 07:39:54
View 2011-12-04 Nene Valley Harriers 10m - Bretton, Peterborough, Cambs 10m Ely Runners were out en masse at the NVH 10m road race on Sunday with 15 members making the short trip to Peterborough. The race is run over a twisty but flat course through Bretton in the suburbs of Peterborough. The race is mainly run on cycle paths and road, with the only perils coming from the odd flight of steps and bollards found in the middle of the cycleways at disconcerting regularity. The cool conditions were ideal for running and the course is pretty sheltered negating the effects of the westerly wind. There were some fine performances from ER on the day with 6 PB’s and two ER registering their first times for 10m. John Manlow ran a first PB for a while, Ian Day was running in green for first claim Hunts AC; Kieren Drane is back running well after NYC and Steve Tovey was pleased with his new PB. Gary Wilberforce ran with Tom Russell pacing them both to PB times. Miranda Paul’s running continues to improve and she was very happy with her new PB. David Mould exceeded his own expectations in beating his PB by nearly 90 seconds. David was very pleased with 70:18 after running consistent splits with the first five miles complete in just over 35 minutes. Members were pleased to see John and Fran Crawford again, unfortunately Colin Doak was unavailable for comment. The race was won by Richard Gregory of Ranelagh Harriers in a time of 16:35. Fourteen Ely Runners ran this week with five achieving new personal best times. The 1st ER home in was Luke Crisp in 19th - but for some reason 19th is listed as unknown without a time - he may not have got his barcodes zapped. Luke continues to improve and no doubt will beat his club pb again soon. Andrew O’Hanlon and Peter Harris both ran well and for the junior section Robyn Seabright and Charlie Staaf both put in good times, Charlie with a new PB. Ashley Blackmore, Amber Staaf and Jamie Rendell-Read all made their debuts for this distance in Ely colours. The junior section were assisted on the day by Lesley Wright and Alan Rutterford with Lesley herself achieving a new PB. Running in his first championships race as an Under 15 Boy, Dylan Campbell finished 11th, completing the 4K course, over a bone-dry course which included a track section and the sea wall, in 15.32. In addition, runners had to contend with the strong winds that buffeted the course. 2011-12-05 08:08:05
View 2011-11-27 Peterborough to Ely Hereward 4 Stage Relay (Plus Ultra) 38.8m Ely Runners were out in force at the weekend with members braving the windy conditions as drivers, marshals, runners and ultrarunners took part in this 38.8 mile, 4 stage relay race from Peterborough to Ely. There were six teams of Ely Runners, three Ely Ultra runners plus several Ely Runners competing for other teams. This year’s race was held in rather blustery conditions – with runners on stages 1-3 predominantly helped by a strong Westerly tail wind. The first half of the final stage was tough going into a strong cross wind with the route heading primarily SW from Welney to the outskirts of Pymoor, but relief came as the route turned to the SE for the second half of the stage. Many congratulations to Craig Holgate who won the Ultra Race in a fantastic 4:22:54 averaging 6:47/mile. Craig finished almost 17 minutes ahead of his closest rival despite them being side by side when they reached the final check point in Welney!! Craig was using the race as a warm up for his attempt at the Thames Path 100 next March – a 100m trail race from Richmond in London to Oxford. Robin Webb had been aiming to complete his first Ultra Race in sub 5:30 and so was well pleased with a finishing time of 5:09:49 and 7th place. Emma Greaves finished in a fine 6:38:02 – adding yet another completed Ultra Race to her CV. In the relay race there were strong performances by many Ely runners – but in particular fine runs on stage 1 by Graham Chapman and Peter Gipp saw them finish 1st in their respective age categories. The A team came home in 13th place overall in a time of 4:03:22 at an average of 6:16/mile – putting into context Craig’s achievement!! Many thanks in particular to Alan Rutterford for organising the relay teams and also marking the course from Little Downham to Ely. A big thank you also to all of the recovery and stage drivers (Tony Hall, Nick Dowdy, Darren Murfitt among others) and everyone who turned out to help marshal the route from Little Downham to Ely (including Lionel Smith, Peter Harris and John Glover....apologies if we’ve missed anyone). As ever thanks also to Eric Drury for being in charge of the PA and helping to set up the finish area.
